B.Tech (Mining Engineering)

Program Educational Objectives:

  • Graduate Mining Engineers of NITK, Surathkal shall have ability to solve complex problems of mining and earth resources engineering by the application of sound engineering principles.

  • They shall have the spirit of team work and inculcate the habit of lifelong learning for achieving professional excellence.

  • They shall have in depth knowledge in the entire value chain of the profession starting from exploration to beneficiation of mineral deposits in a coordinated manner.

  • PO       Description

    1   Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and computing to solve Mining Engineering related problems.

    2   Problem analysis: Demonstrate the ability to Identify, formulate , analyze and solve engineering problems related to Mining Industry.

    3   Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for Mining engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate         consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations

    4   Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions related to Mining Industry.

    5   Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities related to Mining Engineering with an understanding of the limitations

    6   The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional mining engineering practice.

    7  Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development of non-renowable mineral resources.

    8   Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice to achieve Mining Industry goals and results.

    9   Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings, for achieving better mine production and safety.

    10 Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as, being able to comprehend and write effectivereports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions, to all mining personnel in the professional hierarchy in the industry.

    11 Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles, and apply these to one’s own work, as a member and leader inteam, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments and seek to achieve the most optmal results.

    12 Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest context of technological change keeping in view the development of new IT based solutions, for better performance of National/International mining sector.  


    PSO 1 Students will be able to solve the mining engineering problems by application of knowledge of basic sciences, engineering, geo-technology, economics, environment & management.

    PSO 2 Students will be able to design mine excavations and conduct mining operations under a variety of geo-mining environments.

    PSO 3 Students will be fully equipped with skills and knowledge related to mine management, optimization techniques with multi-disciplinary skills for achieving sustainable development of mineral   industry.

Ph.D (Mining Engineering)

The Department has been very active in research and development activities in various areas of mining engineering including interdisciplinary. The Ph.D. Program in the Department of Mining Engineering is offered both on full-time and part-time basis. Currently, the department has 32 Ph. D Scholars (12 are full-time basis and 23 are part-time basis) and 31  have completed Ph. D's in various research areas of mining engineering.
